Hamlet Wood began through a significant bequest in 1959, enabling the purchase of 11.5 acres of neglected, formerly coppiced woodland from Maidstone Borough Council. A dedicated committee, led by Alan Blake, spearheaded the development project using funds raised via Christmas bazaars, Scout group collections, and grants.
They cleared roots and built rudimentary tracks, installing a toilet block once water rights were secured. The campsite was officially opened on 19 June 1965, marking a milestone in becoming a dedicated Scout Campsite.
Following its opening, Hamlet Wood has steadily improved its facilities and expanded its grounds. Over the years, additional woodland was acquired—an extra 15.5 acres—alongside the construction of a car park, pioneering equipment, and an service crew block housing workshops and stores.
Today, the 27-acre woodland is managed by a volunteer service team, offering camping grounds, permanent kitchens, training buildings, and activities like abseiling, climbing, orienteering and pioneering to members of the Scout and Guide communities.
